Any Rajini fan who wishes to compare his Thalaivar with the Ulaganayagan should ask himself the following questions:

1) While Kamal has acted in Pan Indian movies in every decade of this career and given hits, how many Pan Indian movies of Rajini (as a hero) have been there in the last 4 decades, movies that all Indians would now?
2) A lot of Kamals movies have the distinction of being  Bilingual and Trilingual hits and BB's. When he was giving superhits and BBs in multiple languages nammadhu Superstar was doing Thathinkinathom giving the most number of Duds in a short span of time like Siva, Adhiasaya Piravi, Kodi parakkathu, Dharmathin Thalaivan , Oorkavalan, Maaveran to name a few
2)Any Rajini movie released with a Kamal movie has never made it big be it Sakalakavallavan Kaali , Punnagain Mannan/Maaveran , Vetrivizha/Mappillai,Dhevar Magan(Pandiyan). Only exception is Thalapathy(Guna) with Thalapathy becoming a hit only in A centers though.
3)Kamals successes in the 80s include major Tamil Blockbusters like Sakalakavallavan, Kakki sattai , Thoongathe Thambi Thoongathe , Punnagai Mannan, Nayagan to name a few. He did straight  Telugu BBs like Swati Mutyam , Marocharitra, Saagara Sangamam and Hindi BBs like Ek Duje Keliye , Giraaftar, Saagar, Sanam teri Kaasam. He also gave a Malayalam Super hit Chanakyan. He has acted in over 40 Malayalam movies. Most current Malayalam heroes actually take Kamal as an inspiration than even Mammooty or Mohanlal

2)Other than Tamil he has hardly had any bilingual or trilingual successes in the last 30 years. Two movies that come to mind that have had some kind of bilingual response is Baasha and Narasimha in Telugu. Other than that he is pretty much a local TN phenomenon
3)Cannot work in other languages
4)Needs big directors, good music , comedians , opening scenes , punch dialogues and heroines to succeed
5)Can never act in small budget movies due to his own cliched image.
6)Even hit movies of Rajini are hardly known outside the Tamil diaspora. Remember TN has a population of only 70 million compared to Indias billion.
7)Earliest known record of Rajini movies making it big outside TN is in the  mid 90s
8)Rajini's situation now is worse than even new stars like Siva Karthikeyan who has given more hits than he has. He takes the title of Flop Super Star given his dismal BO performance in the last 17 years.
9)Two Vadivelu oneliners that come to mind when one thinks of Rajini and his hyped up media image. One is  "Building strongu Basement Weaku". Another one is 'Opening ellam nalla thaan irukku.Aana onnoda finishing seri illayeppa"

Every South Indian hero who thinks he is the king of his jungle needs to ask himself the following questions:
1)At an all India level how many people know me ?
2)How many bi-lingual(Tamil, Telugu) and tri-lingual(Tamil, Telugu and Hindi) hits have I shouldered in my entire career?
3)Have I succeeded as a hero in other languages especially Hindi?

Kamal is the only South Indian hero to answer yes to all the above questions. If a producer decides to do a trilingual movie with a popular South Indian hero, can they put Mohanlal, Mammooty, Rajini, Pavan Kalyan, Vijay, Ajith ,Darshan or Sivaraj Kumar? Most of these heroes will be able to give success in their home state but not consistenly all over India. Kamal is the only guy who can and the only guy who has.

Verdict :  You can be a superstar maybe even a demigod in one state(MGR,Rajkumar,NTR,Rajini) but it takes a lot more to be a Pan Indian Hero
